Over the past year a number of the under 16s lads and under 18s girls have been working together as part of a RFU initiative VRugby.
The rewards gained by the club, the community and the volunteers has been immense.
The group initially had to specify that they would run a project that would be of benefit for the club and in return the volunteers would receive a T-Shirt and the chance to attend their level one coaching course. The cost of the course is £100 so with 10 volunteers that was saving the club £1000. The project lead by Jo Riches and Ste Jones involved the volunteers assisting at the Minis Christmas Party and arranging the Junior Quiz Night, by putting their heart and soul into to both events it helped raise funds for the club and was both be a great success.
So impressed with their input the club nominated the group for an RFU Presidents Award. These are National Awards present annual to clubs all over the country, Only two clubs in the North West received an award in 2010 in any of the 12 categories and although they group did not win they came runners up and were present with a trophy and a cheque for £100 at this years Lancashire Awards Ceremony.
7 of the volunteers have since attended their Level one coaching course and have qualified so our congratulations go to them. The volunteers are now keen to increase their involvement in not just helping at social events but also coaching the kids.
Recently 30 coaching session were delivered in 6 local schools across Tyldesely and one of the volunteers Laura Riches was very proactive in delivering the session. These sessions cumulated in a School Tournament held on 30th June at the club where Laura, Peter Gaskell, Harry Pollard and James Ashmead helped run and ref the games for the 100 pupils attending from local schools. The event was a great success and couldn’t have happened without their input.
Impressed by their enthusiasm and ability they have been asked to assist in a number of Borough events throughout Wigan, representing their club and learning new skills along the way.
The icing on the cake came when two of the volunteers James Ashmead and Harry Pollard were nominated by the club to attend a free 3 days Leadership Course put on by the RFU at Trent University in August they have both been accepted.
On their return they and the other volunteers will assist at a 3 day summer camp put on by the club for local kids between 18th and 20th August.
The volunteers involved are Laura Riches, Bojan Johnson, Natalie Dagnall, Phoebe Gibson James Ashmead, Peter Gaskell, Harry Pollard Nathan Rushton and Matthew Guest and Paul Gilbanks.
