Schools Tournament Great Success
Written by Jo Riches

During June Jo Riches has delivered over 30 Tag Rugby sessions in the local primary schools in Tyldesley. The schools involved were Holy Family, St Georges, St Stephens, St Ambrose, Garrett Hall and Hindsford. The sessions have been either in curriculum time or taken place as after schools clubs and involved years 4 to 6.

The sessions have proved very popular and cumulated in the Annual Schools Tournament at Tyldesley Rugby Club now in its 10th year.  Five of the schools were able to take part and a total of 100 children enjoy the competition. The day was run by Jo and the Clubs Youth Volunteers who helped organise and ref the matches on the day.

There were two pools with the winners of each Pool making it through to the  final.   St Ambrose made it through and played Holy Family in what was a very competitive game after a long afternoon.  St Ambrose came out on top taking away for a second time running the Tyldesley RUFC Inter School Trophy. All school received a trophy for taking part and players received either an award or certificate for their contribution to the Tournament. The awards were presented by the Club President Terry Alexander.

Thanks go to all the school taking part and also to Laura Riches, Peter Gaskell,  James Ashmead and Harry Pollard for the help and support on the day.

Youth Volunteers
Written by Jo Riches

Over the past year a number of the under 16s lads and under 18s girls have been working together as part of a RFU initiative VRugby.

The rewards gained by the club, the community and the volunteers has been immense.

The group initially had to specify that they would run a project that would be of benefit for the club and in return the volunteers would receive a T-Shirt and the chance to attend their level one coaching course. The cost of the course is £100 so with 10 volunteers that was saving the club £1000. The project lead by Jo Riches and Ste Jones involved the volunteers assisting at the Minis Christmas Party and arranging the Junior Quiz Night, by putting their heart and soul into to both events it helped raise funds for the club and was both be a great success.

So impressed with their input the club nominated the group for an RFU Presidents Award. These are National Awards present annual to clubs all over the country, Only two clubs in the North West received an award in 2010 in any of the 12 categories and although they group did not win they came runners up and were present with a trophy and a cheque for £100 at this year’s Lancashire Awards Ceremony.

7 of the volunteers have since attended their Level one coaching course and have qualified so our congratulations go to them. The volunteers are now keen to increase their involvement in not just helping at social events but also coaching the kids.

Recently 30 coaching session were delivered in 6 local schools across Tyldesely and one of the volunteers Laura Riches was very proactive in delivering the session. These sessions cumulated in a School Tournament held on 30th June at the club where Laura, Peter Gaskell, Harry Pollard and James Ashmead helped run and ref the games for the 100 pupils attending from local schools. The event was a great success and couldn’t have happened without their input.

Impressed by their enthusiasm and ability they have been asked to assist in a number of Borough events throughout Wigan, representing their club and learning new skills along the way.

The icing on the cake came when two of the volunteers James Ashmead and Harry Pollard were nominated by the club to attend a free 3 days Leadership Course put on by the RFU at Trent University in August they have both been accepted.

On their return they and the other volunteers will assist at a 3 day summer camp put on by the club for local kids between 18th and 20th August.

The volunteers involved are Laura Riches, Bojan Johnson, Natalie Dagnall, Phoebe Gibson James Ashmead, Peter Gaskell, Harry Pollard Nathan Rushton and Matthew Guest and Paul Gilbanks.

Future projects will be run and anyone aged 16 to 24 is very welcome to get involved just see Jo Riches for more information

Under 18's Take Awards
Written by Steve Duckworth

Tyldesley under 18s girls have just finished what has to be their most impressive season yet. Taking part in the North West Merit league they remained undefeated throughout the whole of the season to be clear winners. They then took part in the Keswick 7s festival and again won all their games to be victorious.

Their biggest triumph came when the travelled to Harpenden to the National 7s Tournament. Many teams boasted England under 20s yet we had no players above the age of 17. After a loss to the eventually cup winner 3 tries to 1 Tyldesley progress through the competition to make it to the final of the Plate. Taking on Letchworth one of the pre match favourites and although tired after a long days competition the girl came out on top winning 19 nil. The team of Laura Riches, Sian McGuinness, Kayleigh Sutherland, Jen Hamon, Rachel McCoy, Phoebe Gibson Jenny Carney Bojan Johnson and Alison Burrows proved they could take on the best in the country and do themselves, their club and the North proud.

The icing on the cake was at this year’s Lancashire awards dinner the girls were voted Lancashire Female team of the year. It is the first time the award has ever been given to a junior side and very well deserved. Heres hoping we have the same success next season. Well done girls you have been amazing.
