In every respect this was a fine response following last weeks narrow reversal to promotion chasing Stockport.
Tyldesley’s big bustling pack were left cursing upon the referee’s announcement fifteen minutes before kick-off that the opposition had no recognised front row and that therefore, uncontested scrums would be the order of the day.
This is never satisfying for the spectators or, especially, the players as a static scrum leads inevitably to slow ball, flat, ever encroaching, defences and less room in which to play.
Inspite of all this Tyldesley quickly adapted their game plan, knuckled down to their task and, with one or two understandable exceptions, displayed terrific discipline in extremely frustrating circumstances.
With each team guaranteed their own scrummage ball the challenge became one of how best to use it given the lack of space outside the scrum.
Early on both teams chose to kick for territory and hope to force an opposition mistake deep in their own half.
Tyldesley employed this tactic successfully on several occasions and, by the end of a generally forgettable first half, held a crucial 9-0 lead courtesy of three very well struck Jamie Aldred penalties.
In the second period the home side picked up their game considerably and stand off Paul Martin managed to generate more pace out wide by firing out bullet like long range passes to outside backs running from deep.
This created several breaks and, following one such foray deep into the Ormskirk half, Lee Davies jinked his way over the line to register the games first try. Aldred converted from out wide.
Tyldesley continued to dominate throughout the next twenty minutes and went further ahead when Aldred scored his seventh try of the season from close range.
Another successful conversion extended the lead to 23-0 and the game was effectively over.
Ormskirk, to their credit, did not throw in the towel and pressed hard for a score of their own in the final ten minutes. The Tyldesley defence, strong all afternoon, held firm however and, in the dying moments, and after a crunching Michael Vardon tackle dislodged the ball it was Martin who ran fully seventy yards to score in the corner. Aldred missed his only kick of the afternoon and Tyldesley ended deserved 28-0 winners.
Next weeks game is away at New Brighton. |
