BROUGHTON PARK 31- 30 TYLDESLEY
Written by Barry Chuckle

For the second time this season Tyldesley suffered heartbreak with the last kick of the game as they once again lost by a point to Broughton Park.

Tyldesley's typical slow start did not help their cause and almost immediately gave away a penalty for offside which O'Brien gratefully converted to give the home side an early advantage.

Skipper Worsfold levelled the scores with a penalty of his own after 7 minutes but Tyldesley then immediately handed the lead back to Broughton Park when they gave away a second kickable penalty.

The home side were doing all the attacking in the early part of the game and with 14 minutes on the clock they crossed on the right after a 5 metre scrum. The score was converted and so was their second try on 20 minutes which left Tyldesley staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat.

The expected onslaught failed to materialise as Tyldesley got a foothold in the game. Maybe the home side were too aware of Tyldesley's league position and though it would be a walk in the park as they were playing an expansive game but failing to make any real headway in the second quarter.

Tyldesley built on the defensive effort to work a good field position and eventually created an opportunity for Crampton to step inside off his wing to score out on the left. Worsfold's conversion attempt just failed but Tyldesley could feel the tide turning.

Broughton Park continued their expansive approach and it was this bullish tactic which was to be their undoing when, from deep inside their 22, they took a quick tap only for John Fisher to strip the ball in the tackle and from that platform Tyldesley worked the chance. Despite some initial stubborn defending Tyldesley controlled the ball sufficiently to create an opening for Worsfold who stepped through the advancing defence to score a try he converted himself.

There were no further scores in the half but Tyldesley were certainly in the ascendancy as the half time whistle sounded.

H/T Broughton Park 20-15 Tyldesley

Worsfold stroked over his second penalty a minute after the re-start only for O'Brien to push Broughton Park back to a five point advantage 6 minutes later.

It was Tyldesley however who were looking the more dangerous and with 50 minutes played James O'Connor had the ball knocked out of his hand as the rolling maul went over the line but 5 minutes later Tyldesley took the lead. Scrum half Soulsby took a quick tap when Tyldesley were awarded a penalty 15 metres from the home sides posts and despite being ankle tapped with the line begging he managed to stretch over for a score under the posts to tie the scores, Worsfold's conversion put Tyldesley ahead for the first time.

With 63 minutes showing on the clock O'Brien restored Broughton Parks lead with a 40 metre penalty. They then scored a fortuitous try, when a sliced kick looked to be going out, Tyldesley wing Crampton thrust out his hand sensing a breakaway opportunity only to see the ball go to ground and Broughton Park seized upon their chance to score a well worked try wide on the right. O'Brien missed his only kick of the afternoon to give Tyldesley a glimmer of hope.

With 4 minutes remaining a home side attack broke down inside the Tyldesley 22 and full back Wilcock hacked the ball upfield. But with 20 metres to the line the ball did not bounce kindly and another kick saw the ball agonisingly bounce away from him and he was adjudged to have knocked on over the line.

The pack however turned over the resultant scrum and Tyldesley set about pounding the home sides line. Eventually the ball made it out to the flank and second row Cartwright took a pass from Crampton to crash over wide on the left. Earlier in the season Broughton Park converted a last minute try to win the game at Tyldesley. This time it was Tyldesley's turn, but Worsfold attempt drifted just to the left of the posts.

From the restart Broughton Park competed well and turnover ball saw them control 4 phases of play before the ball was whacked out of play much to their collective relief.

Desperately unlucky again for Tyldesley but conceding 20 points in the first 20 minutes is far from ideal and was ultimately their undoing. Taking away the poor start they played as well as they have all season and must build on this for the second half of the season. Good performances from Worsfold and Wilcock with Cartwright and Pulman playing well from the pack.

Next week Tyldesley welcome Burnage to St Georges Park kick off 2.15pm.
